Fishing & spearfishing
The same water, forty feet down.
The reefs that make the waves also hold the fish. Four hours out of Awang harbour with a guide who dives them every week — trolling on the way out, spearfishing on the drop-offs, hand-lining over the coral. Beginners and certified freedivers both welcome.
How the morning goes
Trolling on the way out
Lines go in as soon as we clear the harbour and stay in for the crossing. Mackerel and trevally run these waters, and the twenty-five minutes to the reefs is fishing time rather than transit time.
Spearfishing the drop-offs
Once the surf goes soft mid-morning we anchor over the reef. If you can snorkel, you can do this — the guide takes you along the shallow edge and shows you how the fish hold. Certified freedivers get taken out to the deeper ledges instead.
Hand-lining the coral heads
The way the crew have always done it, and still the most effective on the reef itself. No rod, no reel, a line over the side and your fingers reading what's down there. Harder than it looks and more satisfying than it sounds.
Eating what you land
Whatever comes up goes over the coals afterwards, with rice and sambal. If the sea gives you nothing, we cook anyway — nobody goes home hungry.
