The signature trip
One boat, two sessions, and a coast most people never see.
We meet at Awang harbour before the sun clears the cliffs and come back after it has gone. In between: the reefs of Ekas Bay, a fish cooked on the deck, and a second spot chosen on the afternoon tide.
How the day runs
06:30 · Awang harbour
Boat out
Boards loaded, coffee in hand, lines off. Twenty-five minutes along the cliffs while the skipper picks the first stop from the swell and the wind.
07:00 · Session one
The morning surf
Two to three hours on whichever reef is holding the cleanest swell. The boat stays on the shoulder the whole time — get in, get out, move on when it drops.
11:30 · Anchored in the bay
Grilled fish lunch
Whole fish over coals, rice, sambal, fresh fruit. Eaten on the deck with the anchor down in flat water, which is the part nobody expects to remember and everybody does.
14:00 · Session two
The afternoon surf
New tide, new spot. Usually the one nobody else can reach — the reason this trip exists rather than a scooter and a car park.
17:30 · Back to Awang
Sunset run home
The last hour of light across the bay, board shorts still wet, everybody quiet.
